How can we begin to make changes in this country? Well, let me offer my thoughts...first of all, become socially and potically active. How about the Hispanic Society of America, The Hispanic Caucus, The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, La Raza, to name a few. They all need our help, money and time. How about volunteering your time to mentor latino children? A few hours a week may be all the time that these children need to keep them out of gangs or out of the hands of drug dealers. Contact your mayor, senator, congressman/woman or other elected official and tell them you DEMAND that they pay attention to your needs. Tell them you are tired of state, local and federal authorities focusing their powers on minorities for petty crimes when white collar crime is responsible for billions of dollars stolen out of our pockets. Demand that your teachers be paid a fair salary to teach our children, Demand that social services be expanded and health insurance be offered to everyone. Demand that minorities be courted for higher education. Are you aware that of all of the UC (University of California) schools, less than 8% are latino? And you can thank the Governator for stripping even less for higher education. By the way, he is NOT looking out for you, he is looking out for whites and he WILL continue to keep us small if we allow him. WE have the power to get him out of office. WE have the power to get Bush out of office. WE have the power to bring ourselves up and into the middle class if WE stand up and demand it. Education is the surest way that we can do this. We can then go home to Mexico and teach them how to help themselves.
